How Does Cloud Migration Work

As the internet has matured into the 21st century, cloud computing has become a popular buzzword. Cloud computing reduces the need for owning physical hardware by replacing it with off-site computing infrastructure. Many businesses are choosing to move their business operations into the cloud to reduce the dependency on expensive, space consuming and fragile physical hardware. Moving digital operations from the office to the cloud is known as cloud migration and it’s happening more and more frequently as computing needs become more complex. So, how does cloud migration work? In this article we’ll go over the basics of cloud migration and how it can benefit growing businesses.

What Are the Benefits of Migrating to The Cloud?

Migrating business operations to the cloud is a way to get away from the continually rising expenses associated with the storage, maintenance and upgrading of physical hardware. As they age, these legacy systems become more prone to damage and failure compared. And they’re generally being phased out. Using cloud services reduces the drawbacks associated with physical systems.

Another business buzzword for the 21rst century is scalability – the ability to easily grow exponentially. Because of its virtual nature, cloud computing easily provides the space needed for scalability. Being able to exponentially grow services without the exponential for hardware encourages profit growth rather than rising costs.

Working from the cloud allows every employee to access the necessary computer data and operations from anywhere. No longer are employees tied to a physical location as demanded by legacy hardware. Cloud computing provides a flexibility not found in legacy systems.

Physical hardware requires physical space and that costs money. A business that relies on cloud computing doesn’t have to worry about maintaining physical space for growing collections of hardware. Migrating to the cloud can also reduce the cost of IT services as many of these operations can be performed automatically by the cloud service.

What Types of Cloud Systems Exist?

There are generally three types of cloud systems from which a business will need to decide upon. A public cloud is one that’s used by many different businesses at the same time. Public clouds have the benefit of being a more economical choice while allowing for easy scalability. Private clouds are also available which helps with security and customization, but there’s a premium to be paid for privacy. Hybrid clouds can be a combination of private and public clouds or a mix between cloud services and legacy hardware.

How Does A Business Migrate to The Cloud?

Although every business will be different, there are a few basic steps that every company will need to take when migrating to the cloud.

The Plan

By coming up with goals and how to attain them, a plan that’s unique to the company in question can be customized. Identifying objectives, creating deadlines, establishing performance benchmarks and deciding on a security strategy will all be necessary parts of the plan.

Moving Data

The movement of data is the fundamental part of migrating to the cloud. Depending on the amount of data being moved, there will be different ways of doing this. It might be able to be done over the internet or may require physical movement of hardware and wired connections.

The Switch

Once the data has been moved, computing operations will switch from the legacy system to the cloud. This may require some troubleshooting, but eventually the operations will be fully switched over. From here the legacy system can be shut down or used as a backup system.
