What Do Managed Servers Include

Managed Servers

There often comes a time where a company that has relied on shared web hosting services needs to make the jump to a dedicated web server. This is often a result of company growth and the need for more, and more specific, resources. Companies making this leap need to decide whether they’ll require a managed or unmanaged server. Of course, this brings up the question, “What do managed servers include?” To answer this question, we’ve put together this overview of managed and unmanaged servers.

What is an Unmanaged Server?

An unmanaged server is typically set up by the web hosting company. They take care of procuring the hardware, installing the operating system, and maintaining the network and data centre infrastructure. Everything else is the responsibility of the client’s IT team. This can include installing and configuring software, installation of software updates and patches, setting up firewalls and malware protection, management of plugins, content management systems, and more.

Unmanaged servers are generally used by companies with a dedicated and experienced IT team who are able to troubleshoot any problems to maintain adequate service levels. Companies who have little to no IT experience, or who would rather dedicate their time to running their business rather than the IT infrastructure, will generally benefit from using a managed server.

What is a Managed Server?

When it comes to a managed server, the managed service provider takes the majority, if not all, of the responsibility for maintaining the IT infrastructure. Similar to unmanaged services they’ll set up the hardware, install the operating system and maintain the network while also being on hand to take care of any IT problems should they arise.

Most managed server companies provide a service level agreement (SLA) covering the responsibilities, services, and assistance which they promise to provide to the client. If these goals aren’t met, the SLA will also outline the consequences or the penalties that must be paid.

Terms of the SLA usually involve network connectivity and maintenance, active server monitoring, support specifications, permitted levels of downtime (if any,) the availability of system administrators, trouble ticket processes, software and security updates, firewall maintenance, and more. Every web hosting company will have its own terms and conditions when it comes to managed servers, so it’s important to compare various service packages.

How Can a Managed Server Web Hosting Company Help?

For those who have little to no experience working with IT and network infrastructure, managed servers are virtually essential. If your company relies heavily on the internet, downtime can be catastrophic. Having access to a team of experienced IT professionals who can assess the problem and get you back online in as short a time as possible can be the difference between a minor blip and a complete shutdown of your services. They can provide advice, finetune your systems for maximum efficiency, help with software installations and ensure you’re protected from malware and other online security threats.

Managed servers also work well for companies that would rather focus on the business at hand while outsourcing IT tasks to a team that very likely has more experience in dealing with a wide variety of problems associated with running and maintaining a network. Letting an outside company worry about IT security, performance and reliability free up time and resources that can be dedicated to furthering the company’s goals.
